For my Senior 3D Capstone film, I got to work on the short film Heartstrings, as one of the team's lead character artists. My goal in making this post is too exhibit some of my modeling contributions to the film as well as to present the film in general as I am quite proud of how far its come. With a team of 10 students, Heartstrings was a year-long project that made heavy use of technical animation and music to convey its story. The film has currently received 35 selections or awards.
I was responsible for making our film's violins and Eamon, the proud father of our film's leading violinist, Ailidh. Our film experimented with various lighting and texturing techniques to create it's hand-painted look development. We ended up using MASH to distribute paint stroke cards that picked up their color based on vertexes. This effect in addition to our film's fantastic texturing and lighting allowed our scenes to mimic the appearance of oil-paintings. I primarily worked as one of the lead character modelers, however my complete list of personal responsibilities on the film have included character modeling, prop modeling, rigging, lighting, and rendering. Assets were sculpted in ZBrush, retopologized in Maya, and textured in Substance Painter. I learned a lot about the animation pipeline while working on Heartstrings and am very glad I got the chance to work with such talented animators and artists on this special project.
